One of the most famous cases in American history is that of the zodiac killer. Between December 1968 and October 1969, this unidentified individual shot at least five people to death and left two others wounded. His victims were either alone or with their significant other when they were targeted. The first victim was David Faraday and Betty Lou Jensen who were just on their first date. They parked near a scenic spot close to Lake Herman Road in California where they had planned on watching the sunset together. A few minutes after 8PM gunfire broke out, hitting both teenagers repeatedly before the shooter fled from them in his car. Investigators believe there was more than one person involved even though only one male voice was heard during the shooting based on phone calls made by him to the press.
About a month later, Donna Lass was reported missing by her supervisor after she failed to show up for work in the morning. The last time anyone had seen her was September 6th when she left Lake Tahoe where she lived with her husband who had been away on business at the time of the disappearance. Her car turned up six weeks later near Petaluma close to Zodiac's crime scenes which led investigators speculating that he could have picked her up while driving around the lake. They believed this because they found traces of dirt from Sonoma County inside her vehicle even though there were no signs of foul play or struggle having taken place suggesting that she willingly got into his vehicle. Less than a year later, another couple suffered a similar fate as the Magellans. In December 1968, Paul Stine was shot and killed by an assailant who witnesses described as a tall male wearing a hooded costume. Zodiac later called the police to report he had committed this crime and provided them with details no one could have known except for the police or someone close to Paul Stine himself. It is around this time that reports of a man dressed in a similar fashion attempting to attack another individual surfaced but because there were no leads or evidence found at the scene it went largely unnoticed until much later when people began talking about Zodiac's way of operating.
1. "This is the Zodiac Speaking" - Zodiac Killer Documentary
In the late 1960s, a serial killer called himself "the Zodiac" and challenged police to find him. He wrote letters to newspapers boasting of his killings and signed them with astrological symbols. His identity is still unknown and he killed as many as 37 people before disappearing in 1974. This is the Zodiac Speaking tells the story of this infamous criminal who has never been caught or identified despite extensive efforts by law enforcement agencies .
The film uses images, documents and interviews to tell the story of this man's crimes including the fact that his final letter contained a new cryptogram which he challenged readers to crack. Despite using some dramatic license in places it is probably the best portrayal of this killer ever made with many graphic descriptions of his violent murders as well as recreations of various incidents that both state prosecutors and defense lawyers believe will be crucial in putting him behind bars. He also spoke to police who agree they are convinced he was responsible for these horrific attacks. In 2016 people still remember him and nobody knows if he'll ever be caught or identified.
2. The Horrifying Murders Of The Zodiac Killer - Zodiac Killer Documentary
The Zodiac killer's murders were terrifying and brutal. But what made them even more frightening was the mystery behind their identity, which remains unsolved to this day.

One of the Zodiac's victims was a young couple that he shot and stabbed to death. Bryan Hartnell, 20, died from his injuries at the scene. Cecilia Shephard, 22, managed to survive despite being shot in the back and neck during a struggle with her killer before she finally passed away several hours later in hospital.
How did they die?
In 1969, police found a message written on a car door near the crime scene - it said: "Vallejo/12-20-68/7-4- 69-Sac." In these attacks, three people were killed by shooting, stabbing and bludgeoning. In addition one survived after being shot twice and beaten severely over the head.

He was the most notorious serial killer in American history, and yet we still know very little about who he really was.
