Intro: Elon Musk Documentaries
Elon Reeve Musk is a South African-born Canadian American business magnate, investor, and engineer. He is the founder, CEO, and lead designer of SpaceX; co-founder, CEO, and product architect of Tesla Motors; chairman of SolarCity, co-chairman of OpenAI ; co-founder of Zip2 ; and co-founder of PayPal. In December 2016, he was ranked 21st on the Forbes list of The World's Most Powerful People. As an entrepreneur and inventor, Musk has become one of America's most innovative entrepreneurs.
Musk made his fortune when he sold his start-up company PayPal to eBay for $1.5 billion in 2002.
In 2013, he earned $78.2 million from the sale of PayPal-related stocks and real estate investments. Musk has been involved in other significant companies, including being co-founder of Zip2, a software company that provided city content publishing software for media organizations, and Pal Talk, a video chat website for people with a broad range of interests.
Musk established his first known venture - Zip2 Corporation - which developed and marketed an Internet "city guide" for the newspaper industry. His next company was X.com, which offered online banking services like money transfer and email payments before PayPal emerged as its leading competitor. In March 1999, X.com was acquired by Confinity, which had been founded by Peter Thiel —and later spun off PayPal. Musk founded his next company, SpaceX, with the intention of building spacecraft for commercial space travel. He installed rocket engines manufactured by his previous company in their factory and grew SpaceX into one of the leading private companies in its field within just a few years.
Musk became CEO of Tesla Motors in 2008, after it went bankrupt following an unsuccessful attempt to deliver modern electric cars. Tesla's primary goal was to produce affordable mass market electric vehicles. It announced production of its first vehicle, the Tesla Roadster, in early 2008 at a news conference where Musk said he hoped to see all gasoline-powered cars become obsolete. Elon Musk has not shied away from talking about global warming or related environmental issues and how they pertain to human behavior— especially regarding the transportation industry and how it can negatively impact our environment.
Tesla Motors' first model, the Tesla Roadster, was an all-electric sports car. The company's next vehicle product, the Model S sedan, was unveiled at a gala on 7 April 2009. Musk said that he wanted to offer his patents for free to encourage more widespread adoption of electric vehicles. In February 2015, Musk indicated that he hoped to unveil a third generation electric car within 2 years.
Musk helped to develop SolarCity, a solar energy services company that was founded by his cousins, Lyndon and Peter Rive. The primary goal of SolarCity is to provide affordable solar-powered electricity to homeowners, businesses, schools, non-profits and government organizations. Musk remains the largest shareholder. In 2013, Musk announced that SolarCity intends to build the nation's largest solar plant in southern California
Elon Musk has stated that he does not believe there is life beyond planet Earth and that Mars would be humanity's "backup planet." He has advocated for establishing a Mars colony in case something happens terrestrially –such as an ailment –that makes human survival very difficult. Musk has stated that humans have a "moral obligation to become a multi-planet civilization as soon as we can." He also has a vision of sending passengers to flyby Mars and return to Earth within his lifetime. In 2010, he unveiled a plan to build an experimental rocket with vertical take off and landing capabilities ; this technology would be helpful in creating a future spacecraft. In 2012, Musk thought about undertaking the challenge of designing, building and deploying space rockets at lower cost for commercial flights to come from private companies - such as SpaceX.
Elon Musk has been compared by some media outlets –such as CNN –to the fictional character Tony Stark, who is the protagonist in the Iron Man comic book series and films.
